Americans spent $32.4 billion in 2012 on sleep-related aids—from noise machines to specialty pillows, according to IMS Health, a marketing analytics firm in Parsippany, N.J. And according to an August study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8.6 million people in the U.S. reported taking medication for better sleep in the month before.We tried four ways to help us shut off our racing thoughts and ease into bedtime.

Fitness After 40-Something

Retirees Bob and Alex Linn of Vail, Colo., exercise year-round outdoors. In the winter, they ski. In the summer, they cycle through the mountains.

It hasn't always been that way.

Bob Linn, 81, who ran a company that managed hospital computer systems, and his wife Alex, 75, an artist, didn't exercise much until their mid-40s. It just wasn't a priority beyond maintaining their weight. "When you're young, you don't think about it and you're busy raising a family," says Mr. Linn.
